Role playing games (RPGs to their friends :-) ) are basically grown-up "Let's Pretend," only, this time it's with dice & some rules, so you can't say "Oh, yeah? Well, I've got all that, and MORE so THERE!" and thereby win the game purely by a temper tantrum.
They come in all varieties - futuristic (a la Gene Rodenberry or Walter Jon Williams or Jules Verne), horror (vampires, werewolves, or anything H.P. Lovecraft dreamed up), fantasy (King Arthur, J.R.R. Tolkien), modern (ever want to be James Bond? Even just a little?), and anything else you could dream up. Here are a few sites where you can learn more about gaming and the various games themselves.
